LEGAL GUIDE · TENANCY, CIVIL RECOVERY AND COURT ORDERS

Informing the Rent Authority about a tenancy agreement

For a tenancy within the 2025 Act, section 4 requires a written agreement and joint information to the Rent Authority within two months of the agreement. If the parties fail to inform jointly, the Act provides a separate-information route within the following month. This is distinct from any registration or stamp-law requirement.

What to examine

Keep the signed duplicate agreement and the information form, supporting documents and acknowledgment. Section 4 connects the information process to relief under the Act, so it should not be treated as optional paperwork. The statutory requirement for a digital platform does not itself establish that a particular online portal is operating for your district. Verify the currently accepted submission mode.

Records to collect

  • Signed tenancy agreement
  • First Schedule information and supporting records
  • submission acknowledgment or identification number
  • correspondence about joint submission

Keep complete, dated copies and preserve originals. Note which records are missing and where they may be requested; do not alter a document to fill a gap in the history.

The applicable framework

The 2025 Act creates separate roles for the Rent Authority, Rent Court and Rent Tribunal. Its definitions, exclusions, agreement-information requirements and savings clause must be considered before selecting a route. Section 40 limits the Rent Court to the tenancy framework and excludes a determination of title or ownership. Current local appointments and submission arrangements should be verified.

A practical next step

Check the applicable 2026 Rules and the Rent Authority's current directions. Record the agreement date and submit through the accepted process without assuming that a private lease registration completes this separate duty.
