Correcting a name or clerical error in land records

A clerical correction is appropriate to investigate when the record inaccurately reproduces an identifiable fact, such as a name or number. A disputed transfer or competing ownership claim should not be presented as a spelling correction simply to avoid the proper proceedings.

What to examine

Compare the entry with its source rather than changing one extract in isolation. The same error may appear in several records, while differences in transliteration may refer to the same person. Explain the connection using reliable identity and historical documents; do not obtain a new affidavit that contradicts an existing deed without addressing it.

Records to collect

  • Affected extract
  • source deed or order
  • identity documents
  • earlier consistent entries

Keep complete, dated copies and preserve originals. Note which records are missing and where they may be requested; do not alter a document to fill a gap in the history.

The applicable framework

For Kashmir property, the revenue entry, registered instrument, physical possession and underlying legal right should be examined separately. Different issues can require different authorities or civil relief. A service directory explains available services but does not replace the governing statute, current notification or an order in the particular matter.

A practical next step

Prepare a side-by-side error list, identify every affected parcel and ask which records and orders require correction. Keep the acknowledgment and resulting correction order together.
